Rosa María Santana celebraba el té literario junto al resto de Damas de Blanco en casa de Ovidio, en el puerto de Altamira, Santiago de Cuba, cuando agentes policiales las detuvieron e introdujeron en un omnibus. Las mujeres fueron trasladadas y abandonadas en el poblado del Cristo. Cuando consiguieron volver, fueron reprimidas y agredidas tanto verbal como físicamente.
