Javier Antonio fue detenido junto a otro activista en la carretera a Gibara de la provincia de Holguín. Ambos se dirigían a llevar unas planillas al municipio de Gibara para recoger firmas de un proyecto de su organización. Los oficiales detuvieron el carro en el que ellos iban, los bajaron y los detuvieron mientras ejercían violencia física y maltratos verbales sobre ellos. Se les detuvo hasta pasadas las 4 de la tarde y les decomisaron todos los documentos que portaban.
