Mayelin Santiesteban fue detenida al salir de su domicilio por agentes de la Seguridad del Estado y de la Policía Nacional Revolucionaria, para impedirle participar de una actividad del Movimiento Damas de Blanco del cual es miembro. Permaneció bajo arresto por más de 10 horas sin que se le permitiera hacer uso del baño, ni ingerir alimentos, ni agua.
